Cologne Bonn Airport has opened a fully modernised security checkpoint featuring advanced CT scanners, streamlined screening and enhanced passenger facilities.

Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) has officially opened its fully modernised central security checkpoint following a €25 million investment aimed at improving passenger processing, increasing screening efficiency and enhancing the overall travel experience ahead of the busy summer holiday period.
The redevelopment introduces 11 new security lanes equipped with the latest computed tomography (CT) screening technology, making Cologne Bonn the first major airport in Germany to fully equip its central security checkpoint with the advanced systems.
The project forms part of the airport’s wider Next Chapter modernisation programme, which is delivering phased improvements across terminal facilities, passenger services and airport infrastructure.
CT technology transforms passenger security screening
The new CT scanners allow passengers to leave electronic devices and liquids inside their hand baggage during screening. In addition, the permitted liquid limit has increased to containers of up to two litres, reducing the need for passengers to prepare their bags before entering security.
The upgraded checkpoint also introduces redesigned lighting and sound systems, improved wayfinding and a dedicated Kids Lane, where younger passengers can independently place and collect their luggage using child-friendly platforms.
Chief Executive Officer Thilo Schmid said: “Today’s opening is an important milestone for the future of our airport. Our new security checkpoint is among the most modern facilities in Europe. It combines the highest security standards with significantly greater convenience for our passengers while also strengthening our airport’s competitiveness.”
Airport Managing Director Cenk Özöztürk added: “Our goal was to take safety, efficiency, and the quality of the passenger experience to a new level. The new security checkpoint is far more than a technical upgrade. It represents a modern, digital airport that consistently puts the needs of its travelers first.”
The opening has also been welcomed by regional authorities and airport partners. Teresa De Bellis-Olinger, Mayor of Cologne, described the redevelopment as a milestone that strengthens the airport’s role as a regional transport hub while supporting economic growth and tourism.
Oliver Krischer, Minister of Environment, Nature and Transport for North Rhine-Westphalia, said the new screening systems would both improve passenger processing and enhance aviation security.
Eurowings, the airport’s largest airline, also welcomed the investment. Chief Executive Officer Max Kownatzki said improving security screening helps create a smoother start to passengers’ journeys and supports a more comfortable airport experience.
Alongside the new security checkpoint, Cologne Bonn Airport continues to invest in wider terminal improvements, including upgraded lounges, additional food and beverage outlets and expanded digital services as part of its long-term strategy to modernise airport operations and strengthen the passenger experience.
