Miami International Airport (MIA) has unveiled a new art exhibition that blends environmental storytelling with the passenger journey, transforming one of its departure gates into an immersive celebration of South Florida’s marine ecosystems.

Miami International Airport Heliotropic Seekers exhibition

Located in the airport’s Gate D29 Gallery, Heliotropic Seekers: Currents of Passage has been created by Beatriz Chachamovits, a Miami based artist whose work explores the beauty and fragility of ocean habitats.

The installation features 30 suspended acrylic and translucent silhouettes representing coral reef species and marine life. Inspired by the migratory patterns of ocean creatures and the currents that guide them, the artwork draws parallels between the movement of marine ecosystems and the continuous flow of passengers travelling through one of the busiest international airports in the United States.

Natural daylight passing through the terminal enhances the display throughout the day, creating shifting reflections and movement that reinforce the feeling of drifting underwater. Rather than presenting coral reefs as static environments, the installation highlights them as living ecosystems that constantly adapt, regenerate and evolve.

The exhibition title references heliotropism, the natural movement of plants towards sunlight, while also symbolising the human desire to explore, travel and seek new experiences. The artwork encourages visitors to consider the connections between people, nature and the shared rhythms that influence both.

Daniella Levine Cava said: “Along with showcasing the natural beauty of coral reefs found along Miami-Dade County’s shores, this striking new art installation offers our visitors a calming, reflective space within MIA.”

Chachamovits added: “Inspired by the biodiversity of South Florida’s coastal ecosystems, Heliotropic Seekers invites travellers to pause, experience a sense of wonder, and reconnect with the beauty of our ocean.”

The exhibition will remain on display until 10 January 2027 and forms part of the airport’s long running MIA Galleries programme, which showcases local artists while enhancing the passenger experience through public art.

Managed by the airport’s Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Division, the galleries aim to create engaging cultural spaces that reflect South Florida’s diversity and creativity. By integrating art into the terminal environment, Miami International Airport continues to demonstrate how airports can become destinations that inspire reflection, celebrate local culture and create memorable experiences beyond the journey itself.
