Passengers departing from Zurich Airport (ZRH) from 26 June can now carry liquid containers of up to two litres in their hand baggage, following the completion of a major security screening upgrade.

The new rules apply to local passengers beginning their journeys at Zurich Airport and passing through the Security Control Building. The changes are designed to improve passenger convenience while maintaining high security standards.

The updated procedures have been made possible through the installation of advanced computed tomography (CT) scanners across all security screening lanes. The technology allows security personnel to conduct three-dimensional analysis of hand baggage and accurately screen liquids and electronic devices without requiring passengers to remove them from their bags.

New technology improves passenger experience

Under the new process, passengers no longer need to place liquids in separate transparent plastic bags before screening. Electronic devices can also remain inside hand luggage throughout the screening process.

Airport officials said the changes will help accelerate passenger processing while improving the overall travel experience.

The liquid rule change forms part of a wider modernisation project that has been under way since late 2025. Security lanes in the Security Control Building have gradually been upgraded to the new CT technology, replacing conventional screening equipment.

Roman Jung, Project Manager at Zurich Airport, said: “The project is currently in its final phase. From Friday onwards, no conventional screening equipment will remain in operation.”

Following completion of the programme, all 26 screening lanes in the Security Control Building are now equipped with CT scanners.

Important information for travellers

Despite the new rules, some restrictions remain in place. Double-walled containers, such as thermos bottles, must still be empty when passing through security because their construction can make contents more difficult to analyse.

Passengers travelling with analogue photographic film are also advised to request manual screening, as CT scanners may damage film materials.

Transfer passenger rules remain unchanged

Zurich Airport noted that transfer screening areas have not yet been upgraded with the new technology. Passengers using these facilities must continue to comply with existing regulations limiting liquids to containers of 100 millilitres carried inside a transparent one-litre bag.

Travellers are also reminded that liquid restrictions may vary at other airports and should check local requirements before departing on return or connecting flights.
