Airport security is entering a more demanding phase. The industry has spent years discussing the potential of CT screening, artificial intelligence and biometrics.

Now, the challenge is no longer whether these technologies can work. It is whether airports can make them work within the realities of existing infrastructure, operating models and workforce pressures.

The experience of recent large-scale deployments shows why this distinction matters. Introducing new technology is rarely a simple replacement exercise. It can require changes to terminal infrastructure, new skills across the workforce and a complete rethink of how performance is measured. Systems designed to improve throughput can create new operational dependencies, while automation can shift responsibility rather than remove it.

The human role, therefore, becomes more important, not less.

As routine tasks are increasingly automated, security officers are expected to focus on exceptions, judgement and situations that cannot be easily standardised. That requires investment in training and a clearer understanding of which decisions should remain firmly in human hands. The same applies to outsourced operations, where contracts and performance measures designed for legacy processes may no longer reflect the realities of an automated checkpoint.

Passenger trust is another part of the equation. Biometric and AI-enabled systems may offer greater convenience, but adoption cannot be taken for granted. Airports must be clear about how data is used, what choices passengers have and where accountability sits when technology becomes part of the journey.

The next generation of airport security will not be defined by the technology installed at the checkpoint. It will be defined by the decisions airports make around it.
