Miami International Airport brings vibrant digital artwork and underwater imagery to travellers through Monica López De Victoria’s Techno-Tropical exhibition

Miami International Airport (MIA) is giving travellers an immersive introduction to Miami’s creative community through Techno-Tropical, an exhibition by multimedia artist Monica López De Victoria.

The exhibition is being displayed at the airport’s moving images, or MIAmi, video art wall near Gate J7 until 1 November. It features five of López De Victoria’s video works created between 2019 and 2025, bringing together choreography, colour, memory, water and digital imagery.

The exhibition reflects the artist’s distinctive visual style, which combines geometric motifs and pastel colours associated with Miami’s Art Deco architecture with the vibrancy of digital culture and tropical environments.

For Miami International Airport, the installation provides passengers with an opportunity to experience contemporary artwork while travelling through the terminal.

Miami airport showcases Techno-Tropical exhibition

One of the featured works is Chromacasting, a vibrant, Bauhaus-inspired piece created during López De Victoria’s residency in Dessau, Germany. The work combines synchronised swimming and colour, using movement to create an optical and visually dynamic experience.

The exhibition also includes Ripples Surfacing – Touch, which explores the experiences of Korea’s young artistic swimmers and examines the relationship between water, identity, hopes and vulnerability.

Currents, a site-specific video installation commissioned for Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places collection, explores how water connects people living and travelling throughout Miami-Dade County. The work reflects the diverse journeys that shape the region and its changing sense of home.

Meanwhile, ///HEAT///WAVE/// transforms the movements of two hands, belonging to López De Victoria and her husband, into an abstract exploration of relationships and human presence.

The final work, ~~~spinning~~~, uses underwater movement, optical illusions and rippling light to explore isolation and emotional resilience during the pandemic period.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the exhibition gave international travellers another opportunity to experience talent from the local community, while highlighting the importance of water to South Florida.

MIAmi’s wider video arts programme is designed to engage travellers through experimental films, short documentaries, animated works and dance-on-film created by contemporary artists and filmmakers.

López De Victoria is a Miami-born Puerto Rican and Swedish American multidisciplinary artist, educator and professional artistic swimmer. Her practice spans video projection mapping, optical installations, aquatic performance, sculptural textiles and interactive digital extended reality.

Through Techno-Tropical, Miami International Airport is using its passenger environment to connect travellers with local artistic talent while presenting a visual interpretation of the water, movement and landscapes that characterise South Florida.
