Melbourne Airport has unveiled a 20-year master plan focused on passenger growth, terminal expansion, transport connections and sustainable development.
Melbourne Airport (MEL) has unveiled its draft Master Plan 2027, outlining a 20-year vision to support passenger growth, improve connectivity and expand infrastructure at Australia’s largest 24-hour airport.
The plan anticipates passenger numbers almost doubling over the next two decades, with 75 million travellers expected to use the airport annually by 2047. Melbourne Airport welcomed almost 37 million passengers during the last financial year.
Preparation for this growth is already underway, with expanded Pick up and Drop off facilities scheduled to open in October. The improvements will support a wider programme of privately funded investment, including $4.5 billion to expand the international terminal.
The draft plan also includes upgrades to domestic terminals and infrastructure designed to support the long-term growth of Australia’s domestic aviation sector.
Improving transport connections is a central element of the proposal. Melbourne Airport plans to introduce new road infrastructure and enhanced bus services connecting nearby communities, while continuing to work with government on a rail connection to the city via Sunshine.
The master plan also formalises the Eastern Extension Project, involving a 345-metre extension of the east-west runway. The project accounts for the shortening of the runway’s western end required to facilitate construction of Melbourne Airport’s third runway.
Lorie Argus, CEO of Melbourne Airport, said the plan would ensure the airport has the infrastructure required to serve Melbourne’s growing population and economy.
She added that improved local transport links would benefit both passengers and the airport’s workforce, while further development of the airport’s business park could create additional employment opportunities across Melbourne’s north and west.
Sustainability is also incorporated into the master plan, with Melbourne Airport focusing on low-carbon design, resource efficiency and climate resilience across future development.
The draft Master Plan 2027 is available for public consultation, with submissions open until 4 November.
