London Stansted Airport has appointed a construction partner to deliver new skylink walkways as part of its terminal transformation programme.
London Stansted Airport (STN) has appointed a construction partner to deliver its new skylink walkways, marking another milestone in the airport’s long-term transformation programme designed to improve passenger experience and increase capacity.
The new skylinks will provide direct pedestrian connections between the terminal and the airport’s existing satellite buildings, allowing passengers to walk directly to departure and arrival gates.
The project will also enable the airport’s existing track transit people mover system to be decommissioned, creating space for future expansion of the terminal towards the airfield as part of later development phases.
Supporting passenger growth
At the centre of the wider transformation programme is a 16,500m² extension to the existing terminal, which will introduce additional retail, food and beverage outlets alongside larger passenger areas. Once completed, London Stansted said it will become the largest single-terminal airport in Europe.
The skylinks will feature moving walkways and will accommodate assistance buggies, making journeys between the terminal and gates easier for passengers with reduced mobility.
Construction work will begin later this summer using an off-site assembly approach. Sections of the walkways will be built inside a vacant airport hangar before being transported overnight across the airfield using self-propelled modular transporters. The airport said this approach will improve safety by reducing work at height while minimising disruption to daily operations.
Rob Stewart, Capital Delivery Programme Director at London Stansted Airport, said the project is a vital element of the airport’s transformation programme, supporting passenger growth while unlocking additional capacity on its existing runway.
The airport added that passenger numbers continue to reach record levels, with the wider investment programme designed to improve operational efficiency and enhance the overall passenger journey.
