San Diego International Airport launches SAN Assist programme for non visible disabilities

San Diego International Airport (SAN) has launched SAN Assist, a dedicated support programme designed to assist passengers with non visible disabilities, including autism, chronic illness and sensory sensitivities.

The initiative aims to improve confidence and reduce stress for travellers who may find the airport environment challenging. SAN Assist provides personalised services and pre-travel preparation to create a more accessible and supportive passenger journey across Terminals 1 and 2.

The programme includes one to one Travel Guides who assist passengers on the day of travel, helping them navigate check in, security and departure areas with greater ease. In addition, Familiarisation Tours allow passengers with upcoming travel plans to visit the airport in advance and practise navigating the environment, building comfort and familiarity before their journey.

All services are subject to availability. Travel Guides must be requested at least three business days prior to travel and are available daily from 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. Familiarisation Tours should be requested two to three weeks in advance and are offered Monday to Friday during standard business hours.

Kimberly Becker, President and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, said the programme reflects the airport’s commitment to inclusive travel. “We are very proud to offer our SAN Assist program to help all travellers feel supported and welcomed at SAN,” she said. “By providing personalised assistance and advance preparation options, our goal is to help all travellers easily navigate the airport experience and ensure their experience is positive.”

SAN Assist forms part of the airport’s broader accessibility strategy, recognising that not all disabilities are visible and that tailored support can significantly enhance the passenger experience.
