Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) has unveiled a landmark $20 billion capital investment programme that will transform the airport into a modern international gateway over the next decade.

Announced by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, United Airlines and the United States Department of Transportation, the redevelopment represents one of the largest airport infrastructure projects in the United States.
The programme will deliver more than five million square feet of new and renovated facilities while preserving the iconic Main Terminal designed by architect Eero Saarinen. Plans include new concourses, an expanded terminal building, improved passenger circulation and new AeroTrain connections that will eventually replace the airport’s long serving mobile lounges.
Passengers will benefit from redesigned check in halls, upgraded security screening areas, additional gates, improved baggage handling systems and a new US Customs facility designed to simplify international arrivals. Expanded retail, food and beverage outlets and new airline lounges are also included, with plans for one of the largest United Polaris lounges in the world.
Jack Potter said the investment builds on the airport’s long term master plan and will modernise the region’s primary international gateway while creating facilities that reflect the importance of the nation’s capital.
Scott Kirby described the programme as a transformational investment that will deliver the world class airport experience expected by customers and employees while supporting United’s continued growth at its Washington hub.
The investment increases the airport’s planned modernisation funding from $7 billion to more than $20 billion. Much of the programme will be financed through municipal bonds in partnership with airlines serving the airport.
Construction will be delivered in phases while the airport remains fully operational. Significant work is already underway, with the new Concourse E expected to open later this year, providing 14 additional United gates with direct AeroTrain access and enhanced passenger lounges.
The redevelopment reinforces Washington Dulles International Airport’s position as the principal international gateway to the US capital and prepares the airport for future passenger growth and expanded global connectivity.
