Shannon Airport (SNN) has welcomed eight new members to its Airport Search Unit team as the airport prepares for increased passenger traffic during the summer travel season.

The new recruits recently completed a four week training programme covering operation of the airport’s three dimensional screening systems, cabin baggage search procedures, manual handling and sunflower hidden disability awareness training.

Delivered in house, the programme combined classroom learning with practical operational experience. Certification for the new officers was completed by the Irish Aviation Authority.

The recruits come from across Counties Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Cork, bringing experience from customer service, hospitality, retail and airport ground handling roles.

The officers received their certificates during an official welcome event attended by airport management and instructors.

Pat O’Brien said: “Our ASU officers play a vital role at Shannon, both from a security and a customer experience perspective.”

He added that the officers are often the first point of contact for passengers and play an important role in ensuring the smooth operation of the airport.

Richard Chute said the training programme was intensive but praised the group for working well together throughout the course.

The expansion of the ASU team comes as passenger demand continues to grow at Shannon Airport, with around 56,000 passengers expected to travel through the airport during the May bank holiday period and 40 routes operating this year.
