Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) has marked the fifth anniversary of the Aviation Security Company Limited (AVSECO) Canine Unit, recognising its contribution to airport security and the development of inter-agency cooperation across Hong Kong’s aviation sector.

The celebration, held at the airport on 12 June, brought together representatives from aviation, security and government organisations to highlight the achievements of the specialist unit since its establishment in 2021.

Senior officials attending the event included representatives from the Airport Authority Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Police Force, the Customs and Excise Department, the Civil Aviation Department and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.

Specialist unit supports airport security

The AVSECO Canine Unit was established to strengthen security operations across the airport environment and currently consists of 20 professionally trained detection dogs.

The canines are deployed throughout non-restricted areas of the airport and are trained to detect explosives, firearms and ammunition. In addition to supporting security operations, the dogs also serve as ambassadors for the airport, interacting with travellers arriving from around the world.

Lo Wai-kwok said: “Over the past five years, ACU has remained steadfast in its mission to safeguard aviation security, and its achievements speak for themselves.”

He added: “I am confident that ACU will continue to uphold the highest professional standards.”

The anniversary event featured live demonstrations involving working dogs from multiple government departments, showcasing coordinated operations designed to enhance airport security and emergency response capabilities.

Airport officials highlighted the importance of the canine unit as passenger traffic continues to increase following the commissioning of the airport’s Three-runway System and the opening of Terminal 2 facilities.

Vivian Cheung said: “We are fully committed to supporting the professional development of the ACU, reinforcing its critical role in safeguarding the airport.”

The event also provided an opportunity to showcase the continued cooperation between aviation security agencies and government departments as Hong Kong International Airport continues to strengthen its position as a major global aviation hub.
