This week’s picture of the week highlights Hong Kong International Airport conducting a major Terminal 2 operational trial ahead of its passenger launch.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) has conducted a full scale operational trial at its new Terminal 2 departure facilities ahead of the terminal’s official opening on 27 May 2026.

The large scale exercise involved more than 1,100 participants from around 30 organisations, including Airport Authority Hong Kong, airlines, ground handling companies, government departments and Aviation Security Company Limited.
The trial simulated the complete passenger departure journey through Terminal 2, testing multiple stages of the travel process. Participants role played as passengers arriving by Airport Express trains, buses, private vehicles and cross boundary transport before proceeding through self bag drop facilities, airline check in counters, e Security Gates, immigration and boarding systems.
The exercise also tested passenger movement through the Automated People Mover connecting the terminal with boarding areas.
Airport staff participating in the simulation provided operational feedback and observations to help refine procedures before the terminal opens to the travelling public later this month.
Steven Yiu said: “This trial is the largest conducted prior to the commissioning of the T2 departure facilities.”
He added that the airport community demonstrated strong professionalism and commitment throughout the preparation process to ensure a high standard of passenger service.
Once operational, Terminal 2 is expected to handle around eight million passenger journeys during its first year. From 27 May, 15 airlines operating primarily regional routes will gradually relocate their departure check in services to the new facility.
These include HK Express Airways, Hong Kong Airlines and Greater Bay Airlines, with the full relocation programme expected to conclude by mid June ahead of the summer peak season.
