Hong Kong International Airport has conducted a major typhoon preparedness exercise, testing coordinated response measures and Terminal 2 operations ahead of its upcoming commissioning.

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has conducted a large-scale emergency exercise to strengthen its preparedness for the upcoming typhoon season, marking the first use of Terminal 2 (T2) ahead of its commissioning.
The “Summer Blow 2026” exercise brought together around 700 participants from approximately 30 organisations, including Airport Authority Hong Kong, government departments, airlines and airport partners.

The simulation recreated the gradual approach of a tropical cyclone, escalating to severe conditions with the hoisting of Hurricane Signal No. 10. Response teams coordinated actions to maintain safe and efficient airport operations during extreme weather.
Passenger management formed a key part of the exercise, with crowd control drills carried out across both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Staff from airlines, airport operations and Aviation Security Company Limited worked together to guide passenger flow, while refreshments were distributed to those affected by simulated disruptions.
Operational continuity measures were also tested. These included contingency baggage handling procedures to manage overflow, as well as airbridge tie down operations and apron safety checks.
The Airport Emergency Centre was activated to support real time coordination between stakeholders, while the Flight Rescheduling Control System was used to plan the recovery of services.
As the scenario progressed, recovery phase procedures were implemented. These included activating the Taxi Queue Ticket System and coordinating transport services to facilitate passenger departures as operations resumed.
Steven Yiu, Executive Director of Airport Operations, said: “The ‘Summer Blow’ exercise is critical to ensuring our preparedness for the typhoon season.”
The exercise also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to familiarise themselves with Terminal 2’s layout and operational processes ahead of its opening later this year.
