The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded LAX a $289 million grant for new ingress roadways designed to separate airport traffic from local routes and reduce congestion.
Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) has been awarded a $289 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fund new access roads at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The funding, announced this week by US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy through the Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) programme, forms part of a wider effort to upgrade infrastructure, improve safety and expand family-friendly facilities nationwide.
The grant will support ongoing construction of new ingress roadways into LAX, part of the Airfield and Terminal Modernisation Program (ATMP) Roadway Improvements Project. The scheme aims to separate airport traffic from local traffic, easing congestion on Sepulveda Boulevard and improving access to one of the world’s busiest airports.
Reducing congestion, boosting accessibility
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the funding built on existing investment in the airport. “This federal funding builds upon the historic investments we’re making to ensure travellers have a world-class experience when touching down and taking off in Los Angeles,” she said. “These latest improvements will enhance accessibility and reduce traffic congestion while also supporting jobs, spurring economic growth, and advancing our long-term vision for LAX.”
John Ackerman, chief executive officer of LAWA, said the roadway project reflected the airport’s broader transformation. “This is an investment in the future of LAX and the experience we want every traveller to have from the moment they arrive,” he said. “As we continue our transformation, projects like these help us move people more safely and efficiently, while bringing to life our broader vision of an airport that reflects Los Angeles.”
The roadway project is one strand of LAX’s Big Idea, a strategy that positions the airport as a gateway linking Los Angeles’ cultural and creative identity with the rest of the world. LAWA has now received more than $368.6 million in FAA AIG grants for fiscal years 2022 to 2026, covering terminal, baggage and runway improvements.
