Miami International Airport expands biometric screening with TSA PreCheck touchless ID

Miami International Airport (MIA) has introduced TSA PreCheck Touchless ID across its North, Central and South Terminals, reinforcing its commitment to modern biometric security infrastructure and streamlined passenger processing.

Launched in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the biometric capability enables eligible TSA PreCheck members to pass through dedicated lanes without presenting a physical ID or boarding pass. Instead, facial comparison technology securely matches a live image to a stored passport record within seconds, enabling rapid identity verification at the checkpoint.

The rollout spans three of the airport’s busiest terminals. In the North Terminal, the service is available to passengers travelling with American Airlines. In the Central Terminal, both American Airlines and Alaska Airlines customers can access the biometric lane. In the South Terminal, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines passengers are eligible to use the system.

Airport leadership said the deployment complements recent upgrades at Miami Airport, including the full modernisation of TSA Checkpoint 2. The upgraded facility features advanced baggage screening systems and automated bin return technology designed to increase lane throughput by up to 30 per cent compared with conventional checkpoints.

By integrating touchless identity verification with next generation screening equipment, Miami Airport aims to reduce waiting times, improve operational efficiency and enhance the overall passenger journey ahead of the busy spring travel season.

Eligible travellers must opt in through their airline’s app or customer profile where supported, ensuring their Known Traveler Number and valid passport information are stored accurately. A TSA PreCheck Touchless ID indicator will appear on the mobile boarding pass for qualifying flights. Passengers are reminded to carry a physical ID as a contingency if additional verification is required.

The expansion supports wider national efforts to deploy biometric screening across major US airports, with Miami Airport continuing to prioritise innovation within its terminal operations strategy.
