Memmingen Airport is modernising its communications infrastructure through a new digital voice communications platform supporting future growth.

Memmingen Airport (FMM) is modernising its communications infrastructure through the deployment of a new digital voice communications platform designed to improve operational efficiency, reliability and future scalability.
The project forms part of the airport’s broader development strategy as it continues to strengthen its position as Bavaria’s third-largest airport and an increasingly important component of Europe’s point-to-point aviation network.
Memmingen Airport advances communications modernisation programme
The airport has selected a new IP-based communications architecture that will replace legacy analogue systems and support day-to-day operations across multiple airport functions.
The upgrade will provide modern controller working positions within the air traffic control tower while also supporting airport operations teams and fire services through integrated communications capabilities.
According to the airport, the system will improve operational co-ordination through a common user interface and standardised procedures across key departments, helping to streamline communication during routine and critical operational activities.
The digital infrastructure will also allow the airport to expand communications capabilities more easily in the future while simplifying system administration and maintenance requirements.
Julia Baumann said the project represents an important step in modernising the airport’s voice communications infrastructure and replacing legacy analogue equipment.
She noted that the deployment supports the operational requirements of air traffic control, airport operations and emergency response services while providing planning certainty ahead of the busy summer travel season.
The project is scheduled to be completed by July 2026.
The communications upgrade reflects wider investment and modernisation activity taking place at Memmingen Airport as passenger demand and operational requirements continue to grow.
Airport officials said the investment will provide a scalable foundation capable of supporting future operational development and long-term infrastructure requirements.
The technology will be supplied by Rohde & Schwarz through its CERTIUM Voice Communications System platform, integrating existing radio infrastructure into a single digital environment.
Memmingen Airport said the modernisation programme will strengthen operational resilience while supporting the airport’s continued growth as a key regional aviation gateway in southern Germany.
