John Paul II International Airport Krakow Balice (KRK) has opened a major new duty free retail development as part of wider efforts to enhance passenger experience and commercial infrastructure across the airport.

The new Krakow Duty Free by Baltona retail space covers 504 square metres within the passenger terminal and has been designed around the “Sense of Place” concept, incorporating local cultural and architectural themes inspired by Krakow and the surrounding region.

Airport officials said the investment supports the airport’s long term strategy to improve terminal facilities as passenger traffic continues growing rapidly.

The official opening ceremony was attended by representatives from airport operator Krakow Airport, Polskie Porty Lotnicze and retail operator Baltona.

According to the airport, the project was completed within 60 days while maintaining uninterrupted airport operations and continuous passenger retail services during the redevelopment period.

The redesigned retail area incorporates modern passenger focused features including self service checkouts, electronic pricing systems and an open walk through layout intended to improve passenger flow through the terminal.

Large LED display screens and bespoke lighting installations have also been integrated into the space, alongside design elements referencing Krakow’s cultural heritage, including themes linked to the city’s historic Wawel Dragon legend.

Airport management stated the retail upgrade forms part of wider efforts to strengthen passenger experience as traffic volumes continue increasing.

In April alone, Krakow Airport handled more than 1.21 million passengers, representing a 13 per cent year on year increase. Passenger volumes during the first months of 2026 have already exceeded 4.25 million travellers.

Łukasz Strutyński, Chief Executive Officer of Krakow Airport, said growing passenger numbers require continued investment in retail infrastructure and terminal facilities.

The airport said the new development is intended not only to improve commercial performance but also to create a stronger connection between passengers and the identity of the region.

The retail area includes international brands alongside dedicated regional product zones featuring locally connected food and confectionery products.

Krakow Airport has been one of the fastest growing airports in Central and Eastern Europe in recent years, supported by expanding airline operations and increasing international tourism demand.

The latest terminal investment reflects wider trends across the airport sector, where operators are increasingly focusing on retail environments, passenger dwell time and commercial diversification as key elements of long term airport growth strategies.
