Albury Airport has completed a $2.88 million taxiway extension designed to reduce runway backtracking, improve safety and unlock land for future growth.
Albury Airport (ABX) has completed a major taxiway extension aimed at improving safety and efficiency while supporting future passenger growth. The project extended Taxiway Alpha at the western end of the runway, backed by $2.88 million from the Federal Government’s Albury Wodonga Regional Projects initiative.
The extension reduces the need for aircraft to backtrack along the runway, streamlining operations and improving safety during emergency response events. It also opens access to the airport’s Western Precinct, an area earmarked for future aviation development, and forms part of a wider infrastructure strategy to support long-term growth.
Extension unlocks land for future development
Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain said the upgrade would help the airport run more efficiently.
“The Albury Airport is a vital transport link for the region, and these upgrades mean it can run more efficiently,” she said. “The runway extension will help the airport to expand in line with demand and provide economic benefits and travel opportunities for Albury-Wodonga communities.”
Senator for NSW Deborah O’Neill said the investment reflected the government’s commitment to strengthening regional connections, while Senator for Victoria Michelle Ananda-Rajah said the upgrade would help the growing Albury-Wodonga region attract talent and strengthen links to new markets.
Albury Mayor Kevin Mack said the project marked another important step for the region’s transport and economic infrastructure.
“Albury Airport plays a critical role in connecting our region to major capital cities, supporting local business, tourism, emergency services and freight movement,” he said.
“This project positions the airport to support future growth and gives us greater capacity to respond to increasing aviation demand over the long term. We appreciate the Australian Government’s support through the Albury Wodonga Regional Projects initiative, which is helping deliver infrastructure that will benefit the broader region for years to come.”
