London Luton Airport (LTN) has completed a major £18 million runway resurfacing programme, marking its largest airfield engineering project in two decades and strengthening long term operational safety and performance.
The upgrade focused on enhancing the durability and reliability of the airport’s 2.16 kilometre runway, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards while supporting efficient aircraft operations.
Delivered over five months, the project was carried out during overnight closures to minimise disruption. Work took place between 00:01 and 05:45 each night ahead of the first scheduled departures, with a workforce of around 120 specialists and more than 120 vehicles involved in each shift.
The programme required close coordination between airfield operations, air traffic control and multiple airport teams, including engineering, safety and security, to maintain continuity across the airport.
Marc Wolman said the project represents a significant infrastructure milestone.
“The resurfacing programme was a complex and large scale project, delivered safely, on time and with minimal impact on operations and neighbouring communities,” he said.
In addition to resurfacing works, the project included a taxiway extension and the replacement of more than 1,000 halogen runway lights with energy efficient LED units, supporting improved visibility and reduced energy consumption.
A new weather sensor was also installed to enhance forecasting accuracy and support operational decision making.
Lagan Aviation led delivery of the works, with Brandi Davey highlighting the collaborative approach taken throughout the project.
The completion of the upgrade ensures the runway remains in optimal condition, supporting safe and efficient operations while contributing to the airport’s long term infrastructure strategy.
