Runway investment strengthens long-term airport resilience

Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) has secured more than $8.5 million in federal funding to rehabilitate its primary runway, strengthening one of the airport’s most critical infrastructure assets while supporting future growth.

The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation, will support improvements to more than 9,000 feet of existing runway pavement. The project is designed to enhance the runway’s structural integrity, reduce the risk of pavement-related debris and extend the runway’s operational lifespan.

As the airport’s primary runway, the infrastructure plays a vital role in supporting commercial airlines, military operations and general aviation traffic across the River Region.

Congressman Shomari C. Figures, a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, announced the funding after submitting a formal letter supporting the project earlier this year.

Figures said: “The Montgomery Regional Airport is essential to our local, state and regional economy, and this funding will help to make necessary infrastructure updates to improve conditions at the airport and ensure its long-term viability.”

The runway rehabilitation forms part of Montgomery Regional Airport’s wider strategy to modernise its facilities while strengthening safety, operational resilience and economic development opportunities for Alabama’s capital city.

Airport officials said planning and coordination will continue with federal, state and local agencies as the project moves forward. Further details on construction timelines and any operational impacts will be announced once plans are finalised.
