San Francisco International Airport has launched a new visitor pass programme, allowing approved guests to access terminal areas beyond security without a flight booking.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has launched a new visitor access initiative allowing approved guests to enter secure terminal areas without holding a flight ticket.
The new SFO Gate Explorer programme enables visitors to pass through security screening and access airside areas, including shops, restaurants, museum exhibitions and gate lounges.

According to the airport, the programme is designed to help friends and family connect more easily during departures, arrivals and long layovers, while also allowing local visitors to experience the airport environment.
Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet said the initiative reflects the broader role airports play in connecting people.
“Airports are about bringing people together, and this programme creates so many new ways for friends and family to connect,” he said.
Visitors must apply online in advance through the airport’s dedicated Gate Explorer portal. Applications can be submitted up to 30 days ahead of the planned visit, with same day applications also permitted.
Applicants are required to provide personal details matching their TSA approved identification or passport. All applications are vetted in accordance with Transportation Security Administration requirements before approval is granted.
Approved visitors must present both their Gate Explorer pass and valid identification at airport security checkpoints. Participants are subject to the same screening procedures and regulations as ticketed passengers.
The airport noted that daily visitor numbers will be limited to minimise any impact on passenger processing and security wait times.
SFO also reserves the right to refuse or redirect access during periods of high passenger volume or for operational and security reasons.
The programme reflects a growing trend among airports to create more accessible and passenger focused terminal experiences while maintaining strict aviation security standards.
