Prime Minister Robert Abela has described the East Expansion at Malta International Airport as a strategic, high quality investment supporting national growth and future readiness.

Prime Minister Robert Abela has described the East Expansion at Malta International Airport (MLA) as another major quality investment supporting the country’s long term development and international connectivity.
Speaking during a press conference at Malta International Airport, where it was announced that a new 6,000 square metre air terminal will be delivered within two years, the Prime Minister highlighted the transformation currently underway at the airport. He said this transformation is being driven by strong private investment that is supported and sustained by the Government.
“After inaugurating the Priority Guest Terminal last summer, today we are going into the details of another investment of very great importance, the East Expansion. This project reflects what we can achieve when public institutions and private enterprise work together,” said Dr Abela.
The Prime Minister underlined the strategic importance of Malta International Airport, describing it as a pillar of national progress and a key engine for tourism, trade and international engagement. He noted that the airport is often the first and last impression visitors take with them and plays a central role in how Malta presents itself on the global stage.
Dr Abela described the East Expansion as a particularly significant project forming part of a long term commitment to quality, resilience and future readiness. He added that the development is not simply about expanding physical space, but about raising standards and improving efficiency as Malta prepares for future opportunities.
The Prime Minister also noted that the project aligns closely with Malta Vision 2050, the long term national framework set to be officially launched in the coming weeks. The framework prioritises aviation and tourism while promoting smart investment in strategic infrastructure, stronger international connectivity, environmental responsibility and quality of life.
Concluding the conference, attended by Malta International Airport chief executive officer Alan Borg, Dr Abela reiterated the Government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen connectivity, attract investment and create high quality careers for Maltese and Gozitan workers.
