Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has officially opened its new Rental Car Center, a major component of the airport’s ongoing modernisation programme designed to improve the passenger journey and streamline ground transport operations.

The new facility is part of the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Landside Access Modernisation Program, a $5.5 billion infrastructure programme aimed at transforming landside access and improving passenger connectivity ahead of major global events including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The consolidated centre brings together all 12 on airport rental car companies into a single location, simplifying the process for travellers collecting and returning vehicles. Previously, rental car operations were spread across multiple locations near the airport.

The 6.4 million square foot facility integrates a wide range of services including vehicle storage, fuelling, washing and light maintenance operations. By centralising these activities within a single complex, the centre is designed to improve operational efficiency and accelerate vehicle availability for passengers arriving at the airport.

John Ackerman, Chief Executive Officer of Los Angeles World Airports, said the opening represents an important milestone in the transformation of the airport.

“The LAX Rental Car Center marks a major step in transforming LAX and improving the travel experience. It positions the airport to better serve the millions of guests expected for the 2026 World Cup and beyond,” Ackerman said.

Construction on the project began in September 2019, with the first concrete poured in March 2020. Structural construction was completed in July 2021, while the facility itself was finished in early 2023. Adjacent road infrastructure and access routes were completed in 2024 to support operations.

Initial operations began in October 2024 when several brands relocated to the centre. Following further coordination between LAWA and rental companies, the remaining operators have now moved to the facility, enabling full operational capacity.

Companies operating at the new centre include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, Thrifty and Zipcar.

Tom Kennedy, President of Sixt North America, said the new centre will significantly improve the rental experience for travellers arriving at LAX.

“The new Rental Car Center at Los Angeles International Airport will provide a more streamlined and convenient rental experience while improving operational efficiency for customers and operators,” Kennedy said.
