Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) has started annual maintenance works on the Zwanenburgbaan runway as part of its ongoing infrastructure and operational safety programme.

The maintenance works are taking place between 18 and 27 May, during which the runway will be unavailable for air traffic on weekdays.

During the closure period, aircraft operations normally using the Zwanenburgbaan runway will primarily be transferred to the Polderbaan and Kaagbaan runways.

Schiphol stated that the annual maintenance programme is essential to ensure the continued safety and reliability of runway operations.

The works include asphalt repairs, runway marking maintenance, inspections of electrical systems and cabling, drainage flushing, grass maintenance and lighting replacement.

The project is being carried out in partnership with Heijmans.

Alongside the runway maintenance, Schiphol is also renewing Taxiways A and B, which are key aircraft movement routes connecting aircraft to the runway system.

The airport said combining the projects within the same operational period would help reduce disruption for passengers and surrounding communities.

Depending on weather and wind conditions, Schiphol may also increase use of the Buitenveldertbaan and Schiphol-Oostbaan runways during the maintenance period.

The airport acknowledged that changes to runway usage may temporarily affect local communities due to altered flight paths.

Schiphol said it continues planning maintenance schedules carefully to minimise operational disruption while maintaining infrastructure safety standards.

Residents seeking information about runway usage and aircraft operations during the maintenance period have been directed to the Local Community Contact Centre Schiphol.
