Leeds Bradford Airport has achieved Level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation, supporting its net zero strategy and wider plans for sustainable airport growth and operations.

Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has achieved Level 4 status in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, marking a significant step in its long-term sustainability strategy.
The accreditation forms part of the airport’s recently launched Together for Tomorrow programme, which sets out a roadmap to achieve net zero carbon emissions for airport operations by 2030.
Leeds Bradford Airport carbon accreditation supports net zero ambitions
The Airport Carbon Accreditation scheme, operated by ACI EUROPE, is an internationally recognised framework assessing how airports measure, manage and reduce carbon emissions.
Level 4 accreditation requires airports not only to reduce emissions from their own operations but also to align carbon management with the goals of the Paris Agreement and work closely with third party partners to drive wider decarbonisation efforts.
This includes collaboration with airlines, ground handlers and transport providers operating across the airport environment.
Vincent Hodder, Chief Executive Officer of Leeds Bradford Airport, said the achievement reflects a broader transformation in how the airport approaches sustainability.
“It isn’t just about what we do within our own terminal walls; it’s about our role as a leader in the regional economy,” he said.
As part of its sustainability programme, the airport plans to remove gas from terminal operations and increase the use of on-site renewable energy technologies. LBA is also participating in a government-supported study exploring Power-to-Liquid Sustainable Aviation Fuel development.
Further measures include increasing public transport usage among passengers, introducing hybrid airport bus services and enhancing regional biodiversity through environmental partnerships.
The airport also stated that all waste is currently diverted from landfill.
Alongside environmental initiatives, the Together for Tomorrow strategy includes commitments linked to local communities and workforce wellbeing. These include retaining more airport spending within local areas and expanding employee wellbeing programmes.
Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, said the accreditation demonstrates that Leeds Bradford Airport’s carbon management strategy is fully aligned with international climate objectives.
“With concrete steps in place to reduce their own carbon footprint, such as on-site renewable energy generation, the airport is setting a clear path towards net zero emissions under its control by 2030,” he said.
The accreditation comes during a major redevelopment period for the airport, including terminal transformation works and £200 million of private investment aimed at modernising facilities and supporting future growth.
The achievement reinforces the growing importance of sustainability and carbon reduction strategies across the aviation sector as airports work towards long term environmental targets.
