European airports have welcomed a new EU plan to secure jet fuel supply, aiming to protect operations and maintain connectivity amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

ACI EUROPE has welcomed the European Commission’s AccelerateEU plan, designed to safeguard jet fuel availability across the continent in response to ongoing geopolitical instability.
The initiative outlines a series of measures aimed at ensuring continued fuel supply for airports and airlines, helping to maintain operational stability across Europe’s aviation network.
EU jet fuel supply airports strategy aims to protect connectivity and operations
Key measures include the creation of an EU Fuel Observatory to monitor supply levels and available stocks, alongside coordinated action between Member States, fuel suppliers, airlines and airports to identify alternative sources and optimise distribution.
The plan also clarifies regulatory flexibility regarding anti-tankering practices and the use of imported fuels, while assessing the potential need to revise EU rules on strategic fuel reserves to include specific jet fuel requirements.
According to ACI EUROPE, the measures reflect recommendations previously put forward by the organisation in discussions with EU policymakers.
Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, said: “No airport in Europe is currently facing jet fuel shortages, and flight operations are proceeding normally.”
He added that the plan provides a necessary framework to mitigate potential risks, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding global supply routes.
The strategy comes amid concerns over disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit point for global energy supplies.
Jankovec also highlighted the importance of maintaining air connectivity, noting that aviation plays a critical role in supporting tourism, trade and wider economic activity.
He called on Member States to consider additional measures, including the temporary suspension of aviation taxes, to reduce cost pressures.
The plan further reinforces the need for long-term investment in sustainable aviation fuels and energy resilience across Europe’s aviation sector.
