New CT X-ray technology at YEG allows passengers to keep liquids and electronics in bags, improving security efficiency and delivering a faster, smoother screening experience.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority has introduced CT X-ray screening technology at Edmonton International Airport (YEG), beginning with Line 2 at the Domestic and International checkpoint. This marks the first phase of a wider rollout that will see CT technology installed across all screening lines at YEG as part of CATSA’s multi-year national programme to modernise airport security screening across Canada.
The new CT X-ray systems significantly improve the screening experience for passengers. Travellers using CT-equipped lanes no longer need to remove permitted liquids, aerosols and gels of 100 ml or less, medical devices, or large electronics including laptops from their carry-on baggage. The technology uses advanced three-dimensional, rotatable images, enhancing screening officers’ ability to detect explosives and other prohibited items while improving efficiency at security checkpoints.
To help passengers prepare for their journey, CATSA provides an interactive CT X-ray map on its website. The map shows which airports and specific checkpoints across Canada are equipped with CT technology, allowing travellers to know what to expect before arriving at security.
CATSA will continue working closely with Edmonton International Airport throughout the full deployment of CT X-ray systems across all screening lines. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening aviation security while delivering a smoother and more efficient passenger experience at one of Canada’s key airports.
“The introduction of CATSA's CT X-ray technology at YEG underscores the strength of our partnership and our shared commitment to leading-edge technology. By working together, we are advancing security, improving efficiency, and delivering a more seamless experience for travellers who move through our airport,” said Carmen Donnelly, Vice President, Passenger Experience & Terminal Operations at Edmonton International Airport.
Established on 1 April 2002, CATSA is a Crown corporation fully funded through parliamentary appropriations and accountable to Parliament via the Minister of Transport Canada. The scale of the CT deployment highlights CATSA’s focus on innovation and service excellence, working with screening contractors and airport partners to enhance security screening while improving the overall travel experience at Canada’s designated airports.
