Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill Platinum Class I certification, recognising major progress in sustainable waste management across airport operations.

The certification was awarded by the Confederation of Indian Industry following assessment of the airport’s waste diversion and recycling performance during the 2025-26 financial year.

Mumbai Airport waste certification highlights sustainability progress

According to airport operator Mumbai International Airport Limited, more than 99 per cent of waste generated at the airport is now diverted away from landfill through recycling, recovery and waste segregation systems.

The airport joins a limited group of major Indian airports handling more than 50 million passengers annually to achieve the certification.

Waste streams assessed included food waste, plastics, paper, wet and dry municipal solid waste and operational materials generated across the airport environment.

The airport stated that its waste management strategy is based around the 5R principles of Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle and Recover.

A dedicated Environment and Sustainability team oversees segregation processes, monitoring systems and the transfer of recyclable materials to authorised recycling facilities.

The achievement forms part of wider sustainability initiatives being implemented across the airport’s operations.

Over the past year, the airport has expanded renewable energy usage, improved energy efficiency by more than 40 per cent and continued electrification of its ground vehicle fleet.

The airport also recently achieved Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation, further strengthening its environmental credentials.

CSMIA said the latest certification reflects its long term strategy to integrate sustainability into core airport operations while supporting future growth in passenger demand.
