Dalaman Airport (DLM) has become the first airport terminal in the world to meet all of its electricity demand using rooftop solar power, marking a significant achievement in sustainable airport operations.

The milestone follows the completion of Phase 2 of the airport’s rooftop solar project, which forms part of Ferrovial’s wider strategy to develop low-carbon airport infrastructure.

The installation generates more than 20,000 MWh of renewable electricity each year, preventing approximately 8,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This environmental benefit is equivalent to planting around 380,000 trees.

Beyond generating clean electricity, the rooftop solar panels provide natural shading across skylights and glazed areas of the terminal, helping reduce cooling demand during the busy summer months and improving overall energy efficiency.

The system has been integrated into the existing terminal using only rooftop space, eliminating the need for additional land while removing Scope 2 emissions associated with terminal electricity consumption.

Supporting long-term sustainability

The solar project forms part of Dalaman Airport’s wider environmental strategy, which also includes achieving Level 3+ certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Airport officials said the development demonstrates how passenger growth, operational efficiency and sustainability can be delivered together through innovative engineering and renewable energy investment.
