Zurich Airport has welcomed a decisive vote against a proposal that would have imposed additional restrictions on airport operating hours.

Zurich Airport (ZRH) has welcomed a decisive vote by the Zurich Cantonal Council rejecting the Airport Nighttime Peace Initiative, a proposal that sought to introduce further restrictions on the airport’s operating hours.
The initiative, submitted in April 2024, called for tighter limits on airport operations during night-time periods. However, council members voted overwhelmingly against the proposal by 171 votes to five, following a recommendation from the preparatory committee, which had unanimously advised its rejection.
Strong support for Zurich Airport operations
Airport officials said the decision highlights the importance of Zurich Airport’s role in maintaining Switzerland’s international and intercontinental connectivity.
The Cantonal Council concluded that the initiative was incompatible with existing federal legislation, which already regulates airport operating hours and night flight restrictions. Zurich Airport currently operates between 06:00 and 23:30 under the federally approved framework.
Lukas Brosi said: “The Cantonal Council’s clear rejection demonstrates impressively that it does not want to weaken hub operations or Switzerland’s intercontinental connectivity.”
He added: “It is a strong endorsement of the current operating hours from 06:00 to 23:30.”
According to airport representatives, Zurich Airport already operates with shorter operating hours and lower capacity than other major hubs within the Lufthansa Group network.
While rejecting the initiative, the council approved a counterproposal developed by the Commission for Energy, Transport and the Environment. Zurich Airport noted that it does not believe the proposed measures will improve the delay situation and said they would increase administrative requirements.
Should the counterproposal come into force, the airport will provide additional reporting to cantonal authorities regarding exceptions to the federally regulated night flight regime.
The future of the initiative itself remains uncertain. If it is not formally withdrawn by its organisers, as previously indicated, the final decision could ultimately be referred to voters across the Canton of Zurich.
