Singapore power bank flight restrictions rules take effect in April

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore has announced new restrictions on the carriage and use of power banks for passengers departing Singapore, aimed at improving onboard safety.

From 15 April 2026, passengers will be permitted to carry a maximum of two power banks per person on board flights. Any additional devices must be disposed of prior to departure.

The updated rules also prohibit the charging of power banks during flights. Passengers are further advised not to use power banks to charge personal devices while on board aircraft.

The measures follow revised guidance issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization, which updated its Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air on 2 April 2026.

Lithium batteries, commonly used in power banks, can pose safety risks if they overheat or short circuit. The new limitations aim to reduce the risk of onboard fire incidents while maintaining passenger convenience.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore is working with airlines and airport stakeholders to implement the new requirements. Airlines are expected to inform passengers ahead of travel, while airport staff will receive additional training to support enforcement.

Information on the updated rules will also be displayed across airport facilities to ensure passengers are aware of the changes.

Existing regulations remain in place, including the prohibition of power banks in checked baggage and requirements for safe storage to prevent short circuits.

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for any additional restrictions before travelling.

Mr Foong Ling Huei, Director of Flight Standards, said: “The new requirements will help reduce the risk of fire caused by power banks on board flights.”
