A man stabbed a woman at Miami International Airport on Saturday.

This incident triggered a security procedure, where Miami International security evacuated hundreds of passengers as a precaution.

The woman was attacked around 11.30pm local time in Terminal J on the fourth floor outside of the secure area. The incident prompted suspicions of a suspected shooter, but this was later disproved.

A spokesperson for Miami-Dade Police Department, Detective Angel Rodriguez, reported that the man tried to also throw the woman over the railings, but she was able to run away.

Officers were able to recover the weapon without incident. Police have not said whether the man and woman knew each other.

As a precaution, all travellers were evacuated in Terminals J and H, before re-entering and going through full security.

The woman is thought to be in a critical condition and is being monitored closely in hospital. The suspect was arrested at the scene.

“Using all available resources, the units were able to determine there was no active shooter and only the stabbing had taken place,” the statement said. “Airport operations were briefly disrupted but have since resumed to normal operations.”

“We want to assure the public that the situation is under control and the safety of our passengers, staff, and visitors remains our top priority,” the airport said in a statement on Facebook. “Authorities responded immediately, and the situation was swiftly contained.”
