Frankfurt Airport (FRA) has officially opened its new Terminal 3, marking a major milestone in the airport’s long-term expansion strategy and adding significant new capacity.

The new terminal was inaugurated on 22 April by Fraport AG, with more than 400 guests from government, business and the aviation industry attending the ceremony. The opening represents the completion of the largest infrastructure project in the company’s history.

Frankfurt Airport Terminal 3 opening expands capacity and operations

Terminal 3 entered operational service on 23 April, with airlines beginning a phased relocation to the new facility. A total of 57 airlines are set to move operations to the terminal in four stages, with the transition expected to be completed by early June.

The new facility has an initial capacity of up to 19 million passengers per year, with future expansion plans expected to increase this to 25 million passengers annually.

The terminal introduces a range of modern passenger processing technologies, including automated baggage handling and security screening using CT scanners. In addition, passengers will have access to 64 retail and food and beverage outlets, supporting an enhanced airport experience.

Fraport Chief Executive Officer Stefan Schulte said the project represents a significant step forward for the airport.

“Today is a special day – for Fraport, for Frankfurt, for Hesse, and far beyond,” he said. “With the inauguration of our Terminal 3, one of Europe’s most advanced terminals, we are positioning ourselves for long-term success.”

The project, which began in 2015, has been delivered on time and within budget despite a series of global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and supply chain disruptions.

Terminal 3 is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Frankfurt Airport’s position as a major international hub, supporting future growth in both passenger and cargo traffic.

The development is also expected to deliver economic benefits, supporting jobs and enhancing connectivity for Germany and the wider European region.

Hesse’s Minister President Boris Rhein highlighted the importance of the project for national infrastructure and competitiveness.

“It’s a great achievement that the new Terminal 3 is being inaugurated,” he said. “The new terminal strengthens both our airport and our economy.”

With operations now underway,Terminal 3 is set to play a key role in accommodating rising demand while improving efficiency and passenger experience at Frankfurt Airport.
