Billy Bishop Airport introduces sound based wellness tools to support passengers with sensory sensitivities, improving accessibility and creating a calmer travel experience during Autism Awareness Month.

April marks Autism Awareness Month, and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is introducing a new initiative aimed at improving accessibility and passenger wellbeing through sound based experiences.
Nieuport Aviation has partnered with wellness practitioner and sound artist Bianca Lee, founder of Culture of Calm, to deliver sensory aware audio resources designed to support passengers travelling through the airport.
Airport accessibility initiatives
The initiative introduces simple, accessible tools that help passengers feel more relaxed and grounded in what can often be a high stimulation environment. Travellers can access these sound based experiences by scanning QR codes located throughout the terminal, including in both domestic and transborder lounges.
Culture of Calm focuses on integrating calming sound environments into busy public spaces such as airports and workplaces. The approach is designed to support individuals who experience sensory sensitivities, as well as those dealing with general travel related stress.
Eve Wiggins, Chief Operating Officer at Nieuport Aviation, said the programme reflects a broader commitment to inclusive passenger experience.
“The passenger experience guides everything we do. Creating an accessible passenger terminal means thinking beyond the physical journey and ensuring all travellers feel supported and at ease,” she said.
Bianca Lee added that even small moments of calm can have a significant impact in fast paced environments such as airports.
“Airports can be overwhelming, particularly for those with sensory sensitivities. These tools are designed to help passengers feel more regulated and comfortable as they move through their journey,” she said.
As part of the programme, Bianca Lee will also deliver a live sound bath performance at the airport on 15 April as part of the Music on the Fly series, offering passengers an opportunity to experience calming soundscapes in real time.
The initiative builds on existing partnerships with local organisations, reinforcing Billy Bishop Airport’s focus on accessibility, community engagement and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
The program accepts applicants on a rolling basis, and interested parties are encouraged to apply HERE.
