Airports face growing pressure to manage rising passenger and cargo volumes. Advanced screening technologies offer faster throughput, regulatory compliance and sustainable operations for future-ready airports.

Airports worldwide are under growing pressure to handle increasing passenger and cargo volumes while meeting stringent security standards. Evolving regulation from bodies such as ECAC and the TSA, together with rising sustainability targets, are forcing airport operators to rethink how screening is performed. The result is a shift toward smarter, more efficient and more sustainable screening systems.
Modern airports are increasingly turning to advanced screening technologies, a trend led by firms such as Smiths Detection. In October 2025, Smiths Detection launched its new hold baggage and air cargo screening solution, the SDX 10080 SCT. The system combines dual energy computed tomography (CT) with optional high resolution line scanning, delivering high detection performance and future ready compliance.
The SCT system is offered in two configurations. The CT only setup provides lower cost and energy usage, while the combined CT/Line Scanner configuration delivers higher throughput and redundant screening capability. This dual option flexibility allows airports of different sizes and traffic levels to choose a solution that matches their needs.

Importantly, the SDX 10080 SCT is designed to meet current regulatory standards, including ECAC Standard 3.2 and TSA 7.3, while being upgradeable to future standards such as ECAC 4.0 or TSA 9.0, ensuring long term relevance in a shifting regulatory environment.
One of the key selling points of the new system is its capacity to handle high volumes. With a conveyor belt speed of 0.5 metres per second and a large 107 by 81 centimetre tunnel, the SDX 10080 SCT can screen over 1,800 items per hour, making it highly suitable for busy airports facing increasing baggage and cargo demands.
Its modular design and drop in compatibility mean it can replace older systems with minimal disruption. Energy efficient cooling, reduced maintenance complexity and a lower total cost of ownership further contribute to operational sustainability and savings for operators.
Security and compliance remain top priorities
While throughput and efficiency matter, security cannot be compromised. The SDX 10080 SCT is built on Smiths Detection’s proven Explosives Detection System platform. Its advanced CT imaging and optional dual view line scanner enhance detection of illicit or dangerous items, while modern software and screening algorithms support accurate threat recognition.
This ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, giving airports confidence that the solution meets or exceeds current standards while providing a clear upgrade path as security regulations evolve.
The system’s design also embeds sustainability from the ground up. Its energy efficient CT technology, air cooling rather than HVAC reliance, and reduced power consumption help airports lower their environmental impact and align with growing ESG expectations. The modular, upgradeable architecture further means airports can future proof their investment without frequent full replacements.
For many airports striving to meet carbon reduction goals alongside growing travel demand, this balance of security, performance and sustainability is vital.
What to expect from the upcoming webinar
In that context, the forthcoming webinar, Shaping the Next Generation of Hold Baggage and Air Cargo Screening, will be an important event for airport operators, cargo handlers and security professionals. The panel will bring together airport leaders and experts from Smiths Detection to discuss practical strategies for integrating the new screening technologies, achieving regulatory compliance, and optimising passenger and cargo experience.
Attendees will explore sustainable operations, cost effective deployment, scalability for growing volumes, and real world case studies where next generation screening has delivered tangible improvements.
As passenger and air cargo volumes continue to climb and regulatory and environmental pressures grow, the aviation industry needs solutions that deliver efficiency, safety, compliance and sustainability all at once. Screening systems such as the SDX 10080 SCT appear to offer just that, making them a strong contender for airports ready to move forward into the future.
