Aberdeen International Airport (ABZ) has appointed Portland Design to lead a major transformation of its retail and food and beverage offering, as part of a £2.5 million investment programme.

The initiative marks a key milestone in the airport’s wider commercial strategy, with most retail and dining units set to be refreshed or redeveloped over the next 16 months.

Aberdeen Airport retail transformation enhances passenger journey and commercial offer

The programme forms part of AGS Airports’ long-term vision to create more modern, sustainable and passenger-focused airports across its network, which includes Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton.

Portland Design was selected following a competitive tender process and has developed a comprehensive set of retail design guidelines to support the transformation. These guidelines will underpin future developments across the terminal, ensuring consistency and quality across all commercial spaces.

The new framework focuses on improving layout, visibility and overall passenger flow, while also supporting increased dwell time and commercial performance. It also aims to create a stronger sense of place by reflecting the character of Aberdeen and the wider north east of Scotland.

By incorporating customer insights and regional identity, the approach is designed to deliver a more engaging and locally relevant retail experience.

Tom Hack, Retail Director at AGS Airports, said the investment represents a significant step forward for the airport.

“This represents a major commitment to improving the passenger experience and strengthening the airport’s commercial proposition,” he said.

He added that the goal is to create an environment that reflects both passenger expectations and the unique identity of the region.

Portland Design Associate Director Graham Needham highlighted the importance of aligning commercial strategy with passenger needs, noting that the project aims to enhance both the customer journey and long-term commercial outcomes.

The transformation is expected to support stronger partnerships with retail operators, while delivering a more cohesive and high-quality environment throughout the terminal.

With the guidelines now in place, the airport will move into the next phase of implementation, as Aberdeen International Airport continues to invest in improving passenger experience and commercial performance.
