Airports Council International (ACI) World has unveiled its Airport Traffic Forecasts 2024–2053, predicting significant long-term growth in global passenger traffic. By 2043, global passenger numbers are expected to reach 17.7 billion, nearly doubling to 22.3 billion by 2053. This growth is driven by rising middle-class demand in emerging markets, increased international travel, and ongoing investments in airport infrastructure.

What are ACI World’s forecasts?

The forecasts project a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4% from 2024 to 2043, with a slightly slower 3% CAGR from 2024 to 2053. International traffic is expected to grow faster than domestic traffic, with a CAGR of 3.3% compared to 2.8% for domestic travel. ACI highlights the continued growth of emerging markets and the role of airport investments in supporting this expansion.

However, short-term challenges include geopolitical tensions, economic instability, reintroduced tariffs, and supply chain disruptions, which could hinder recovery in certain regions. “Despite the challenges in the near term, global air travel is poised for steady, sustained growth. It is crucial for airports, airlines, and policymakers to take bold, forward-thinking action to anticipate and meet the demands of the future,” said Justin Erbacci, ACI World Director General.

In addition, air cargo is projected to grow steadily at a CAGR of 2.7% from 2024 to 2043 and 2.4% from 2024 to 2053. Aircraft movements are expected to increase significantly, with 149 million by 2043 and 176 million by 2053. ACI’s new forecasting methodology, based on advanced machine learning, ensures greater accuracy for long-term planning. The report offers detailed forecasts on passenger volumes, air cargo, and aircraft movements to assist airport planners and investors.
