Phu Quoc International Airport is set to become a fully self-service aviation hub as part of a major transformation led by Sun Group in partnership with SITA.

The development is designed to support Vietnam’s rapidly growing air travel demand and position the airport ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in 2027.

Phu Quoc Airport SITA self-service transformation accelerates growth

The project will see the deployment of a full suite of digital and biometric technologies across a new Terminal 2, enabling passengers to complete their entire journey through automated touchpoints. This includes check-in, seat selection, baggage processing and boarding.

Once completed, the airport is expected to handle up to 24 million passengers annually, with long-term plans to scale capacity to 50 million.

SITA’s technology will underpin the transformation, including self-service kiosks, automated bag drop units and biometric boarding gates. These systems will be integrated through a central platform to ensure seamless coordination across the passenger journey.

Operational resilience will also be enhanced through the deployment of a local departure control system, ensuring continuity in the event of system disruptions.

In addition, real-time baggage tracking and reconciliation will be supported through dedicated digital systems, while airport operations will be managed using an integrated operational database and passenger information platform.

The project forms part of a broader collaboration between Sun Group and SITA, with the technology provider designated as a strategic partner for future airport developments across Vietnam.

Nguyen Chi Thanh, President of Sun Group, said: “We are pleased to partner with SITA on this strategic collaboration to support the transformation of our airport portfolio.”

The Phu Quoc model is expected to serve as a template for future projects, including developments at Phan Thiet, Con Dao and Rach Gia, as Sun Group expands its airport network.

The airport will also be operated in partnership with Changi Airports International, bringing international operational standards to the development.

With construction underway and opening scheduled for 2027, the project highlights the growing role of digital technologies in enabling scalable, efficient and passenger centric airport operations.
