Edinburgh Airport has announced a £500 million investment programme, marking the largest capital investment in the airport’s history as it prepares for future passenger growth and strengthens its position as Scotland’s leading international gateway. The five-year programme will deliver extensive upgrades across terminal facilities, airside infrastructure and the wider airport campus. The investment is designed to increase capacity, improve operational performance and enhance the passenger experience, while supporting the airport’s long-term sustainability objectives. The first phase of the programme centres on the expansion of the South East Pier, which was recently visited by Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, alongside Edinburgh Airport Chief Executive Gordon Dewar. The development is scheduled for completion in summer 2027 and forms a key element of the wider transformation programme.Supported by Edinburgh Airport’s owners, VINCI Airports and Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), the investment reflects a long-term commitment to strengthening connectivity between Scotland and major international markets.Planned projects within the first phase include:

  • New departure gates to support network growth and additional airline services.

Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney visited Edinburgh Airport’s South East Pier expansion site.

Terminal improvements will form the core of the programme, with developments focused on increasing capacity while maintaining efficient operations and enhancing the end-to-end passenger journey. The investment is also expected to support future long-haul and short-haul growth, enabling Edinburgh Airport to strengthen links with destinations across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia.Alongside capacity enhancements, the programme aligns with the airport’s Greater Good sustainability strategy. Planned works include modernised infrastructure and opportunities to introduce additional low-carbon technologies and initiatives across the airport estate. The wider airport campus will also benefit from upgrades including expanded electric vehicle charging infrastructure, a new access road and other supporting improvements designed to enhance operational resilience and accessibility.Commenting on the announcement, John Swinney said the investment would strengthen Scotland’s global connections while supporting economic growth.

“This significant investment will enable Edinburgh Airport to compete with airports around the world. Alongside delivering real benefits to passengers, this boost will support Scotland’s international connections and help drive economic growth.
“Scotland is open for business and we want to maintain and strengthen Scotland’s position as the most attractive place in the UK for inward investment outside of London and the South East. Opportunities like this airport expansion will help make that happen.”

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, described the programme as a pivotal moment in the airport’s development.

“This is the biggest investment in Edinburgh Airport’s history and comes at one of the most exciting points in its development, adding another important chapter to its story.
“Our growth has cemented our position as Scotland’s busiest and best connected airport, and we know the important role we play in supporting economic growth in Scotland and the UK. This investment will strengthen our international competitiveness by growing Scotland’s connectivity.
“This is the first phase of a multi-year plan that ensures we are building for our future, creating the capacity, capability and customer experience we need and want.”

A spokesperson for VINCI Airports and GIP said the investment demonstrated confidence in the airport’s long-term growth prospects and would help increase capacity while delivering an enhanced passenger experience. The programme will be delivered with support from construction partner Balfour Beatty. Nick Rowan, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s business in Scotland, said Edinburgh Airport plays a critical role in supporting the country’s economy and international connectivity. He added that the company’s experience operating in live airport environments has enabled it to deliver complex infrastructure projects safely while maintaining operational continuity and minimising disruption for passengers and airport users. The £500 million programme represents the first phase of a broader long-term investment vision for Edinburgh Airport, with further infrastructure, operational and sustainability projects expected to follow as the airport continues to expand its role within the UK’s aviation network.
