Miami International Airport (MIA) offered passengers a welcome escape from winter travel disruption with a pop up literary celebration at its Books with an Altitude lending library.

Held on 28 January near gate H5, the activation took place during a period of widespread weather disruption caused by Winter Storm Fern, which led to thousands of flight cancellations across the United States. The event was delivered in partnership with Miami Dade College, Miami Book Fair, and the Miami Dade Public Library System.

The activation coincided with Library Shelfie Day and featured a visit from Avi the poodle, one of MIA’s Miami Hound Machine therapy pets. Accompanied by an MIA Volunteer Ambassador, Avi greeted travellers of all ages, who took photos, interacted with the therapy dog, and selected complimentary books or reading materials while waiting for flights.

As winter storms continued to affect national air travel, MIA played a key role as a support hub for airline partners repositioning aircraft and assisting passengers making onward connections. In addition to operational support, the airport provided additional staff and opened a free overnight sleeping area for stranded travellers.

Miami Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the airport was stepping up during a challenging period for the nation’s aviation system by offering a safe and welcoming space for airlines and thoughtful amenities to ease passenger stress.

The Books with an Altitude lending library reflects the County’s commitment to community partnerships, customer service and innovation, providing a calm and welcoming space for travellers to browse, read and relax even during significant disruption.

MIA continues to work closely with airlines and federal partners to manage ongoing weather impacts while identifying creative, passenger focused ways to improve the terminal experience during challenging travel periods.
