Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is Hungary’s largest airport and is situated 10 miles southeast of the capital’s centre.

Construction on the airport began in 1942 but World War II caused work to slow dramatically and eventually stop in 1944.

Work resumed under Soviet occupation and the airport was eventually opened in 1950, serving a handful of European destinations. Over the following decades passenger numbers rose, scheduled flights became more regular, the number of destinations increased, and more money was invested in the airport. In 1993 the airport’s first overseas flight took off, taking passengers from Budapest to New York.

In 2005 the airport from changed from public to private ownership as BAA bought a 75% stake, selling their share a couple of years later to HOCHTIEF AirPort GmbH.

Budapest Airport currently has one functioning terminal, another terminal which has been out of service since 2012 and a third terminal on which construction is due to commence in 2019.
