Tomorrow the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) will rule on a US industry legal challenge against aviation’s inclusion in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), however Europe’s airlines1 are concerned that this judgement will not diffuse international tension over ETS. (more…)

Issue 3 2011 / 10 June 2011 /
The Declaration on Aviation Security adopted unanimously by the 37th Session of the ICAO Assembly last year set the stage for continuing improvements in how threats to the security of aircraft and facilities worldwide will be dealt with in the future.
The catalyst was the attempted bombing of a commercial airliner on 25 December 2009. Shortly after that incident, ICAO convened a series of Ministerial-level conferences on aviation security in Mexico City, Tokyo, Abuja and Abu Dhabi.
In all of the meetings, there was a strong commitment by states to protect civil aviation from all kinds of terrorist threats, as well as an expression of collective responsibility for taking action. (more…)

At the ICAO Global Runway Safety Symposium, which took place in Montreal on 24-26 May, EUROCONTROL together with the European Commission, EASA and ECAC addressed the issue of runway safety (both incursion and excursion), one of the top safety risk areas in aviation. 450 participants attended this event which aimed at coordinating a global effort and identifying a common framework for improving runway safety.

ACI World Director General Angela Gittens, speaking this week at the ICAO Global Runway Safety Symposium in Montreal, announced a new global safety programme called Airport Excellence in Safety (APEX) designed to help airports worldwide to identify and address safety vulnerabilities.
