If you’re anything like me, you’ll love the feeling of sitting back in your seat as the plane engines roar to life beneath you and you feel the thrill of acceleration for take-off. Last year alone, 66 million passengers experienced that feeling at Heathrow.

With over 180 destinations worldwide, it would be easy to let the glamour of flying detract our attention from the fundamental parts of the passenger’s journey. BAA is investing in redeveloping Heathrow’s infrastructure to create lighter and more spacious facilities, and in improving our services and offerings. In recent years, this has included the opening of Terminal 5 at a cost of £4.2bn, the £200m redevelopment of Terminal 4 and the on-going redevelopment of the eastern part of the airport at a cost of £2.2bn, which will include a brand new Terminal 2. Northrop Grumman to supply air traffic management systems at UK airports

Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Europe-based air traffic management systems subsidiary, Northrop Grumman Park Air Systems, has been awarded contracts by NATS Services to provide surface movement radar and air traffic monitor systems for Heathrow airport’s virtual contingency facility (VCF) and instrument landing systems (ILS) for regional airports around the UK. Siemens appointed Eastern Campus Baggage Integrator at Heathrow Airport

BAA has appointed Siemens, the leading logistics expert for airports and airlines, as the Eastern Campus Baggage Integrator at Heathrow Airport. The scope of the wide portfolio of projects includes the design and installation of Baggage Handling Systems for the new Terminal 2, in addition to specific upgrades and enhancements within the Eastern Campus of Heathrow, which will all be completed by December 2013.

TAM to move to London Heathrow Terminal 1

BAA Developing a Coherent Approach to Fire Safety Design

This is the first in a series of articles which describes some of the fundamental initiatives BAA have developed to ensure fire safety design is an integral part of the design process resulting in fire strategies that meets our operational and business requirements across our airports.

The layout of terminal facilities are designed and developed around processing operations as such the layout of facilities is largely pre determined by processes required to get passengers to and from aircrafts.

Airport Terminals are characterized by large undivided spaces with little physical separation between functional areas. Such design features could potentially make the facility very sensitive to a fire due to the potential for smoke spread throughout the concourse areas. (more…)
