Frankfurt Airport’s (FRA) Winter Timetable 2013/14, which goes into effect on Sunday, October 27, will feature 99 passenger airlines serving 252 destinations in 107 countries worldwide. Compared to the 2012 winter schedule, the number of destinations will drop by 12 to 252 and the number of countries by 6 to 107. Nevertheless, more than half of FRA’s network – 136 intercontinental destinations around the globe – are located outside of Europe, thus underscoring the position and importance of Frankfurt as a vital international aviation hub. With nearly 4,000 flight departures per week for all planned passenger flights, FRA’s level of flight offerings will remain the same as last year’s winter schedule. However, the total number of seats available per week will grow by 2.2 percent to 670,000. This can be attributed to the sustainable trend at Frankfurt toward the greater use of larger aircraft types, whereby the average number of seats per plane will increase by 4 to 170 seats this coming winter timetable. In August 2013, Fraport AG served nearly 5.8 million passengers at its home base Frankfurt Airport (FRA) – a 3.6 percent rise year-on-year and a new record month in the history of FRA. Besides market growth, this significant increase resulted from special effects such as strike-related flight cancellations at the end of August 2012. Also, the number of aircraft movements dropped by 0.6 percent to 42,441, as airlines adjusted the timetable for passenger and cargo flights. Cargo traffic rose by 1.5 percent to 173,905 metric tons, while accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) grew slightly to nearly 2.6 million metric tons (up 0.1 percent). Thus, FRA achieved a new August record for MTOWs as well as punctuality (86 percent).

In July 2013, some 5.7 million passengers passed through Frankfurt Airport (FRA). This represents a decline of 0.7 percent compared to July 2012, which was the record month in the history of Frankfurt Airport.

Fraport AG welcomed 5.4 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base in June 2013: an increase of 40,000 passengers year-on-year and the busiest June in the history of FRA – even though the traditionally busy Hesse summer vacation already started in June last year. For the current year, this special vacation effect will first show up in the July traffic figures. Aircraft movements declined by 1.4 percent to 42,131 takeoffs and landings in June 2013. Cargo traffic rose again in June 2013, increasing by 2.7 percent year-on-year to 184,948 metric tons.

Fraport AG welcomed nearly 5.13 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base in May 2013. Never before in the month of May have so many passengers used Germany’s largest aviation hub. Increasing by 0.4 percent year-on-year, FRA’s passenger volume surpassed the previous record May of 2012. This growth is all the more gratifying because the airlines reduced their flight schedules, especially domestic and European traffic, to adjust for the unusual abundance of public holidays (May 1, 20 and 30) and bridge days in May 2013. Intercontinental traffic – advancing by 2.2 percent – continued to be FRA’s dominant growth driver.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed nearly 4.7 million passengers in April 2013, a decrease of 2.2 percent year-on-year. The drop can be attributed to the Easter holidays commencing in March (earlier start of the Easter travel season) and, especially, to the strike by Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s ground staff – which resulted in about 950 strike-related flight cancellations on April 22 that affected more than 100,000 passengers at FRA. Excluding this one-time effect, passenger figures would have reached last year’s level. FRA’s cargo volume remained relatively constant with 174,000 metric tons handled in the reporting month, only 0.1 percent below the April 2012 figure. Also impacted by the labor strike, aircraft movements fell by 2.2 per cent to about 39,250 takeoffs and landings.

Skytrax, a renowned aviation market research institute, has honored Frankfurt Airport (FRA) with its “2013 World’s Most Improved Airport” award in recognition of FRA’s increased service quality. For Germany’s biggest hub, this award underpins the success of its “Great to have you here!” service program. Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) – also owned and managed by Fraport AG – in Lima, Peru, has also won accolades from Skytrax: the “2013 Best Airport in South America” award for the sixth time and fifth consecutive year, as well as the “2013 Best Airport Staff Service in South America” award for the third time.

Fraport AG welcomed about 3.6 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base during the reporting month of February 2013 – representing a slight increase of 0.2 percent over the same month last year. The Fraport airport company’s February traffic figures were partially impacted by opposing special and base effects. These included the effects of the GDF strike in February 2012, weather-related flight cancellations, the absence of a leap day versus last year, and the airlines’ continuing consolidation of flights during the winter timetable. FRA’s cargo traffic fell by three per cent in the reporting month to 156,258 metric tons. Aircraft movements declined by 2.1 percent to 33,656 takeoffs and landings.

In January 2013, Fraport AG served nearly 3.9 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base – down 4.9 percent year-on-year. This decline was due primarily to the reduction in flight offers implemented by many airlines for the Winter 2012/13 Timetable. Furthermore, weather-related flight cancellations – above all, freezing rain and sleet in mid-January – affected the passenger volume. Excluding this weather effect, the monthly result would have been at least two percentage points better.

Passengers using Frankfurt Airport are very keen on using self-service, according to the 2012 SITA/Air Transport World Passenger Self-Service Survey. Frankfurt leads the way with the use of self-bag-drops as well as self-service check-in. However, because Frankfurt is so advanced in its use of kiosks and web check-in, interest in the use of mobile phone functionality is generally lower than global averages.

In 2012 Fraport AG achieved a record 57.5 million passengers (up 1.9 percent) at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base, during what was characterized as a tumultuous year for the aviation industry. Even the weaker December 2012 reporting month (down 6.3 percent to about 4 million compared to December 2011) did not affect the positive overall result for the entire year. “The airline industry in Europe finds itself in a difficult economic situation. High fuel prices, the burden of the national aviation tax, and weak demand, particularly in Southern Europe, require capacity adjustments. In this environment, Frankfurt Airport with its new passenger record performed very well,” said Fraport AG executive board chairman Dr. Stefan Schulte.

In November 2012, Fraport AG welcomed about 4.2 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base – down 2.7 percent compared to the same month last year. With the start of the Winter Timetable 2012/2013, the airlines implemented a wave of consolidation initiatives because they have been hit hard by the difficult economic situation in many European countries, turbulent dynamics of the global economy, and the burden of national aviation taxes. The reduction in flight destinations and frequencies by the airlines resulted in the passenger decline during the reporting month.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) served approximately 5.2 million passengers in October 2012, up 1.4 percent year-on-year. Despite Hurricane Sandy’s effect on some flights to and from FRA at the end of the month, traffic growth continued in October 2012. Cargo (airfreight and airmail) tonnage declined by 7.3 percent year-on-year to about 180,000 metric tons. Aircraft movements rose by 1.1 percent year-on-year to about 43,000 takeoffs and landings. The accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOW) dropped by 0.8 percent to approximately 2.6 million metric tons.

As scheduled, the first flights were handled in pier A-Plus today. From now on the new pier is part of Terminal 1’s day-to-day operation.
