Airport news / 14 May 2013 /
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) welcomed nearly 4.7 million passengers in April 2013, a decrease of 2.2 percent year-on-year. The drop can be attributed to the Easter holidays commencing in March (earlier start of the Easter travel season) and, especially, to the strike by Deutsche Lufthansa AG’s ground staff – which resulted in about 950 strike-related flight cancellations on April 22 that affected more than 100,000 passengers at FRA. Excluding this one-time effect, passenger figures would have reached last year’s level. FRA’s cargo volume remained relatively constant with 174,000 metric tons handled in the reporting month, only 0.1 percent below the April 2012 figure. Also impacted by the labor strike, aircraft movements fell by 2.2 per cent to about 39,250 takeoffs and landings.

Skytrax, a renowned aviation market research institute, has honored Frankfurt Airport (FRA) with its “2013 World’s Most Improved Airport” award in recognition of FRA’s increased service quality. Fraport AG welcomed about 3.6 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base during the reporting month of February 2013 – representing a slight increase of 0.2 percent over the same month last year. The Fraport airport company’s February traffic figures were partially impacted by opposing special and base effects. These included the effects of the GDF strike in February 2012, weather-related flight cancellations, the absence of a leap day versus last year, and the airlines’ continuing consolidation of flights during the winter timetable. FRA’s cargo traffic fell by three per cent in the reporting month to 156,258 metric tons. Aircraft movements declined by 2.1 percent to 33,656 takeoffs and landings.

In January 2013, Fraport AG served nearly 3.9 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base – down 4.9 percent year-on-year. This decline was due primarily to the reduction in flight offers implemented by many airlines for the Winter 2012/13 Timetable. Furthermore, weather-related flight cancellations – above all, freezing rain and sleet in mid-January – affected the passenger volume. Excluding this weather effect, the monthly result would have been at least two percentage points better.

Passengers using Frankfurt Airport are very keen on using self-service, according to the 2012 SITA/Air Transport World Passenger Self-Service Survey. Frankfurt leads the way with the use of self-bag-drops as well as self-service check-in. However, because Frankfurt is so advanced in its use of kiosks and web check-in, interest in the use of mobile phone functionality is generally lower than global averages.

In 2012 Fraport AG achieved a record 57.5 million passengers (up 1.9 percent) at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base, during what was characterized as a tumultuous year for the aviation industry. Even the weaker December 2012 reporting month (down 6.3 percent to about 4 million compared to December 2011) did not affect the positive overall result for the entire year. “The airline industry in Europe finds itself in a difficult economic situation. High fuel prices, the burden of the national aviation tax, and weak demand, particularly in Southern Europe, require capacity adjustments. In this environment, Frankfurt Airport with its new passenger record performed very well,” said Fraport AG executive board chairman Dr. Stefan Schulte.

In November 2012, Fraport AG welcomed about 4.2 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base – down 2.7 percent compared to the same month last year. With the start of the Winter Timetable 2012/2013, the airlines implemented a wave of consolidation initiatives because they have been hit hard by the difficult economic situation in many European countries, turbulent dynamics of the global economy, and the burden of national aviation taxes. The reduction in flight destinations and frequencies by the airlines resulted in the passenger decline during the reporting month.

Frankfurt Airport’s (FRA) new Pier A-Plus – the 800 meter-long westward expansion of Terminal 1 – opened on schedule after about four years of construction. Flight operations begin on October 10 at the new pier, allowing Germany’s biggest hub to serve up to six million additional passengers per year – thus a total of approximately 65 million passengers per year. This €700 million terminal complex will be exclusively used by Deutsche Lufthansa AG and its Star Alliance partners. In particular, Pier A-Plus provides more docking positions for serving widebody aircraft like the Airbus A380 superjumbo and the Boeing B747 family.

During the first half of 2012, the Fraport Group’s revenue increased by 2.5 percent to about €1.154 billion. Operating result (EBITDA: earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) rose by two percent to €365.7 million. Higher depreciations and amortization as well as a decline in the financial result – mainly due to the inauguration of Frankfurt Airport’s new Runway Northwest and the continuing high investments for the new Pier A-Plus at Terminal 1 – led to a 17.4 percent decline in the Group result to €86.9 million.

Airport operator Fraport AG looks back on an eventful first half 2012 at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) home base. FRA registered 5.4 million passengers in the reporting month, a plus of 5.4 percent and a new historic peak for a June month. The accumulated maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) climbed by 2.8 percent to about 2.5 million metric tons in June 2012. The number of aircraft movements in June 2012 increased by 4.6 percent year-on-year to 42,715 takeoffs and landings. The growth in passenger figures, which has been in progress for more than a year, was strengthened in June 2012 by the statistical base effect of June 2011 when the thinning out of the flight schedule was undertaken to accommodate inauguration of Deutsche Flugshierung’s (DFS) new air traffic control tower at FRA.

Fraport AG welcomed about 5.1 million passengers at its Frankfurt Airport (FRA) global hub in May 2012 – up 1.4 percent year-on-year. FRA achieved a new May passenger record, despite the thinning out of the flight schedule due to three additional long weekends – public holidays with corresponding bridge days – during the reporting month. The private travel segment was positively influenced by these holidays falling in May – for example, with the Ascension Day weekend in southern Germany held earlier than last year – as well as by some travelers taking their vacations sooner in conjunction with the European soccer championship.

The reporting month even surpassed the previous April peak figure set in 2011 by some 130,000 passengers – despite the fact that this year’s Easter break occurred earlier and shifted holiday traffic into March 2012.
