The City of San Antonio Aviation Department celebrate the completion of the 5,000 foot runway with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The City of San Antonio Aviation Department, will celebrate a major milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony recognising the completion and opening of the 5,000 foot runway at Stinson Municipal Airport.

The runway extension is part of a $4.4 million, Texas Block Grant from The Texas Department of Transportation. The improvements included an overlay and extension of Runway 9/27. The runway previously had a length of 4,835 feet, and is now approximately 5,002, making Stinson more appealing for a wider variety of general aviation aircraft, including small corporate jets. Additional improvements include an extension of taxiways, replacement and upgrade of taxiway lighting and navigational aids for both runways, a new engine run-up area for Runway 32 and a helipad.

“This is a major boost for Stinson Airport, and a major boost for the Southside of San Antonio,” said Frank R. Miller, Aviation Director. “The runway extension and other airfield improvements allow Stinson Municipal Airport to host a more diverse, and wide range of general aviation aircraft. It further advances the City’s goal of making Stinson the area’s premier choice for general aviation. These improvements make Stinson and the Southside an attractive location for corporations and businesses to land and house their aircraft.”

In the fall of 2008, Stinson Municipal Airport underwent a $4.8 million terminal expansion which included a 24,000 square foot addition to the existing terminal facility. Stinson Municipal Airport is the general aviation reliever airport for San Antonio International and is the second oldest general aviation airport in continuous operation in the United States.
