Munich Airport has been named Central Europe’s Best Airport in the World Airport Awards by the London-based aviation consultancy Skytrax. In the global rankings for 2012, Munich took the sixth spot behind Seoul, Singapore, Hong Kong, Amsterdam and Beijing. The 2012 edition of the survey set a new record with 12 million respondents.

Responding to the good news, Munich Airport’s CEO Dr. Michael Kerkloh said, “Despite the strong gains in passenger traffic in Munich, we have obviously succeeded in maintaining our high service and quality standards even when measured against the world’s best.” Kerkloh was particularly pleased with Munich’s outstanding ratings in individual categories: “The passengers rate our staff as the best airport personnel in Europe. Perhaps this achievement by a Munich team will inspire the players of FC Bayern to follow in our footsteps as European champions.”

In two categories Munich Airport actually placed among the top three airports in the world: The Bavarian hub was rated third among 400 global airports for “Leisure Amenities” and “Airport Dining”. In addition, Munich offers a top-ranked airport hotel (number two in Europe), namely Kempinski Hotel Airport München.

In the World Airport Awards, passengers take a close look at international airports and airlines every year. In each of the past two years, Munich was awarded the title of Europe’s best airport. In 2012, Amsterdam Airport edged out Munich for that title. The Skytrax surveys ask passengers to evaluate airports under 40 criteria, including quality of handling and services, staff courtesy and efficiency, shopping and leisure amenities and transit facilities.
