Denver International Airport awarded more than $37 million in federal grants

In August and September 2011 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) awarded Denver International Airport (DIA) a combined total of $37,363,832 in federal grants. DIA will use these funds for airport improvement projects including runway rehabilitation work and baggage screening system improvements.

“The funding we receive from the FAA and TSA is vital to our mission within the national airspace system,” said Aviation Manager Kim Day. “These grants will provide for required maintenance and security enhancements. The collaboration and support we receive from our partner agencies is essential in both our physical and fiscal missions, as this money offsets what it costs airlines to operate at DIA.”

DIA has received $22,194,394 in grants from the FAA for airfield maintenance. Approximately $11.6 million will help complete rehabilitation work on Runway 8/26; more than $1.7 million will be used to rehabilitate the taxiway system surrounding Jeppesen Terminal; and roughly $8.7 million will be utilized for the rehabilitation of Runway 16L/34R. Airfield maintenance, including runway and taxiway rehabilitation work, is a standard component of DIA’s Airport Improvement Program.

DIA also received approximately $15 million from the TSA that will go toward improving the airport’s baggage screening system. The agency awarded the airport funding for upgrades to the checked baggage resolution areas, which are used by the TSA for bag processing and checked bag screening.
