Sydney Airport has welcomed the announcement by China Southern Airlines that it will increase its service from Sydney Airport to a double daily.

The additional service will commence on 31 October 2010 adding thousands of extra seats to and from Sydney each week.

China Southern Airlines is one of the largest and fastest growing airlines in the world and carried more than 65 million passengers last year.

The CEO of Sydney Airport Russell Balding congratulated China Southern Airlines on its decision to grow its operations from Sydney Airport.

“Sydney Airport has been pleased to work with the NSW Government to secure this important addition to capacity on the key Sydney-Guangzhou route.

“Last year Sydney Airport welcomed more than 200,000 arrivals from China and this number is growing strongly.

“The decision of China Southern to increase its frequency of operations to Sydney Airport demonstrates again the benefits that flow to Sydney from having Sydney Airport as Australia’s national gateway.

“Chinese outbound tourism is growing strongly and it is important that Sydney, as Australia’s most popular tourist destination, has a strong presence in the Chinese marketplace. The addition of flight capacity is an essential part of future success.

“The timing of this announcement is especially good as it comes just as the upgrade to the International Terminal is almost completed. This means that additional Chinese visitors will enjoy the benefits that the new look terminal provides with new Customs and security processing areas, an expanded retail offering and upgraded passenger waiting areas and facilities,” Mr Balding said.
