EUROCONTROL publishes Call for Tenders CS6-3, Management of Common Network Resources Service/Radio Frequency Function

EUROCONTROL has published the Call for Tenders for a fourth Centralised Service, the Management of Common Network Resources Service/Radio Frequency Function – or CS6-3.

CS6-3 is one of the EUROCONTROL services that manages scarce resources on behalf of ICAO and the European Commission by handling them on a unified basis across Europe. CS6-3 focusses on the management of radio frequencies, as the radio spectrum available for aviation is very congested. The service will help address this both by allocating new frequencies and revising the current allocation of frequencies; and also by monitoring radio interference.

Frank Brenner, Director General of EUROCONTROL, explains: “The management of radio frequencies is vital for the safety and efficiency of air traffic control services in Europe. The aviation radio frequency band has so many users that accommodating a new request can take months, if not years. A central, pan-European approach is essential in order to identify and resolve interference. CS6-3 will help tackle this problem and will help contribute to the sustainable development of the European air transport system.”

CS6-3 will support the work of EUROCONTROL as the Network Manager in mitigating the impact of frequency congestion and contributing to the cost-effective and efficient satisfaction of the future radio frequency requirements of the European States, hence mitigating the impact on the network overall.

CS6-3 will support the effective international coordination of aeronautical frequency requests and will also monitor radio frequencies use of the aviation bands (90 kHz to 5250 MHz) in conjunction with the National Authorities and the Frequency Managers, to ensure correct usage and support interference analysis in the 41 EUROCONTROL Member States.
