British Airways is thanking customers for donating over £230,000 in October through on board donations – the highest monthly amount recorded in 20 years for charity.

The airline, which usually donates money to Flying Start – its global charity partnership with Comic Relief, will temporarily redirect funds between November 9-22 towards the global Ebola appeal, with new on board announcements on all flights.

Mary Barry, British Airways’ community investment manager, said: “We are humbled by the generosity of our customers, who, despite the many fundraising appeals they are faced with, gave more than ever before last month. We hope for the same throughout November to help support those in dire need of our support.”

The airline has also funded trucking for Oxfam to provide essential water and sanitation to reach those affected by Ebola in Africa.

To date, British Airways has raised £8.8 million for Flying Start since the partnership launched in 2010. All the money raised supports projects in the UK and around the world, to help vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

DEC Chief Executive, Saleh Saeed, said: “We very much value the contribution of British Airways customers towards our appeal for the Ebola crisis in West Africa. The incredibly kind donations will go towards life-saving work in our united and sustained fight against Ebola.”
